It’s a Good Day to Die!

August 10th, 2008 | Category: Movies

Starship Troopers 3:Marauder, was released just a few days ago on both DVD & BlueRay.
Being the big sci-fi fan that I am, I went ahead and picked up the DVD box set which includes all three Starship Troopers films to date.

I’m sure that by now everyone is at least remotely familiar with the first film, especially if you are in any way connected to the military. I’ve heard similar stories from members of all military branches…the night you spend in a hotel before heading out to MEPs in the morning, Starship Troopers is one of the many DVDs available for you to watch. If you are having any doubts about enlisting that night, a good helping of war movies, like Starship Troopers, will pump you up enough to forget your doubts.

Starship Troopers 2:Hero of the Federation, picks up a few months after the Federation’s victory on ‘planet P’, and focuses on a small band of troopers stuck on a remote planet deep within the “Arachnid Quarantine Zone.” Among the troopers is a one star general who quickly becomes a target of the new species of bugs who seem to be able to take over a decomposing human body. This film seemed very fake, and even the props looked way below standards, which is why I don’t entirely recommend it.

Starship Troopers 3:Marauder, is a true sequel to the original! Johnny Rico is back in full force, this time as a Colonel in charge of his own ‘Mobile Infantry’ post within the “Arachnid Quarantine Zone.” I won’t ruin any of this movie, since its definitely a must watch if your a fan of the first one! The cheesy recruitment films during the movie are back, and better than ever! Truly, one of the most memorable recruitment ads is the Sky Marshal’s very own music video which I’ve embedded below for your viewing pleasure!

Warning! Watching the video may cause a strong desire to enlist into the Citizen’s Federation.

“Its a good day to die, when you know the reasons why! Citizens, we fight for what is right! A noble sacrifice, when duty calls you pay the price!”

The old Don Adams classic tv show from the sixties remade into a modern hollywood production to earn money trick.

Thats the second longest blog post title I’ve ever seen!

I have to be honest, when I first heard about a Get Smart movie, I wasn’t quite sure what to think. I had been let down before by the short lived Get Smart Again! series, ‘fool me once shame on you! Fool me twice’…well you get the idea.

Fast forward almost two years, and now this movie is poised to release in the coming weeks. The more previews I see for this movie, the more excited I become! The thought of having one of my favorite classic TV shows revisited and updated to fit into our current society excites me!

I was vaguely familiar with Steve Carrell’s work by association, some of my friends love his work. So in preparation for this release I’ve been watching some of Steve Carrell’s movies from the past few years. He seems like a very capable comedian, and I’ve grown to like his style. In fact, if I had to pick any current actor to portray Maxwell Smart, Steve Carrell would be the guy! Which of his works brought me to this conclusion? Dan in Real Life, and The 40-Year Old Virgin.

The ‘Cone of Silence’ gag has already been revealed in many of the movies trailers, but to this day I have yet to see a scene where Max is using his famous shoe-phone. The shoe-phone is a staple of the Maxwell Smart character, and it just wouldn’t be a proper remake without it .

A quick Google Image search reveals one screen capture of Steve Carrell using the phone. Don Adams, the original Maxwell Smart used his trusty shoe-phone to call CONTROL headquarters and update the chief on the current situation. The shoe-phone’s shoddy design required Max to insert a dime before making any outgoing calls, and the obnoxiously loud ring would constantly draw the attention of civilians and enemies alike to Max’s shoes. “Excuse me, your shoe is ringing.”

Its impossible to please everyone, and although I love the shoe-phone, I will be a little disappointed if the new “modern” shoe-phone isn’t something more. There is no justification for our beloved “Agent 86″, Maxwell Smart, to still be carrying around a rotary dialed shoe-phone in an age where cellphones, laptops, and wireless internet are all common place. Perhaps an “enhanced” shoe-phone with added functionality would be more appropriate. A mini super-computer shoe-phone or something of the sort would appease me, as long as it isn’t over done.

Professor Cornelius Venkkman!

SteamPunk Ghostbuster

Steampunk+ Ghostbuster = Awesome!

Being the huge Ghostbuster fan that I am, I couldn’t help but to put this up as soon as I stumbled across it on ectoplasmosis.

I can only hope that the upcoming Ghostbuster games on the "next-gen" consoles are as cool as this guy’s cosplay. Either way, you can be sure that come launch day, I’ll be picking up a copy of Ghostbusters for each system its released on! After all, what better way is there to support my favorite movie franchise of all time, than by throwing heaps of money at officially licensed products?
